Dipentaerythrit is a white, crystalline and odorless powder,basic reaction path thus corresponds to that in the preparation of pentaerythritol, but differs in the stoichiometric ratios used. Its molecular formula is C22H34O13. It can be produced on an industrial scale by a reaction of acetaldehyde with an excess of formaldehyde , in the presence of sodium hydroxide.
